"What does assonance mean? It means getting the rhyme wrong."
A middle-aged, disillusioned ex poet and university lecturer needs a challenge and meets a 26 year-old hairdresser who is bored with her life and wants to make more of it.
Rita loves to walk around the room looking out of the window, while Frank wants to throw his students through it! She claims her customers want a new hair style and to be able to walk out of the salon as a different person, but if you want to change you’ve got to do it from the inside. Is it too late for Rita to change her life? Will the heavy drinking Frank be able to reform to help her achieve this?
Educating Rita was first staged in 1980 and was made into a successful Oscar-nominated film in 1983 with Michael Caine and Julie Walters reprising her stage role.
