Audition for Butterflies Are Free

Audition dates: 15 & 17 September 2026, 19:30

Please arrive at least 15 minutes earlier to complete registration before start

Performance dates: Monday January 11th to Saturday January 16th 2027

The play is set in 60-70’s New York, Don and Mrs Baker are from Scarsdale. No need to prepare an accent for the audition, but if it feels right give it a shot.

NB: Actors for Don & Jill are expected to be comfortable with: intimacy on stage (text mentions Don’s hand on Jill’s breast, kissing scenes, allusion to a sexual encounter between the two) and partial nudity on stage (text mentions both in their undergarments). The director will work closely with the two as intimacy coordinator in closed rehearsals.

Don Baker (male, playing age 18-20) - young, independent aspiring musician. Ideally actor would be able to play a few chords on the guitar and sing. Confident, but his confidence has been shattered in the past. NB Don has been blind from birth.

Please prepare a verse or two to sing at the audition, we will have an acoustic guitar at the theatre if needed. Don’t worry about previous experience, there are only a few verses in the play that we will work on in rehearsals.

Jill Tanner (female, playing age 19) - kooky, silly, speaks her mind and only then thinks.

Mrs Baker (female, playing age above 40) - high strung, Mother Hen mother to Don.

Ralph Austin (male, playing age above 30) - arrogant, sleazy, “I’m the most talented director in the world” kind of guy. Somewhat oblivious to his surroundings and the way he annoys the people he’s speaking with.

Actors of all genders are welcome to audition for all roles, the characters are to be played according to the gender specification above.

Director - Ali Lit (they/them). Any questions or concerns feel free to contact me here.
