Performances 3-8 March 2025 in the Studio
Directed by Nicole Driver
Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons asks a lot of its cast of 2, I say this not to scare away auditionees but instead to hopefully excite actors into diving head first into this challenge with us. The key to any rehearsal room is the ability to laugh, communicate and work hard and I think those 3 things perfectly capture the essence of what we’re looking for in our cast.
With that said… WHO ARE OLIVER & BERNADETTE;
Oliver -
Playing age: up to 50 (no lower age limit)
All accents welcome.
Oliver is a passionate and energetic person he is professionally a musician but a lot his energy is focused towards his political activism. He cares an awful lot about the things that matter to him most and is excited by the power of people despite all of the odds against them.
Oliver is "intelligent in an obvious kind of way" which can occasionally be patronising, though never in a way that feels intentionally mean, his heart is almost always in the right place.
His career as a musician has never really taken off which by comparison to Bernadette’s legal career can showcase itself in ways that feel immature and jealous.
Bernadette -
Playing age up to 50 (no lower age limit)
All accents welcome.
Bernadette is a charming and well rounded character who grew up without a lot of money but has found success in her adult life as a family lawyer. Bernadette takes a lot of pride in her accomplishments but is often met with judgement from her more artistically driven partner.
She can be quiet in comparison to Oliver’s more obviously bubbly energy but this shouldn’t be mistaken a total lack of humour or energy. Bernadette can occasionally struggle to communicate which can cause a lot of the difficulties in their relationship.
The Play
The play shares with its audience a window into the lives of Oliver and Bernadette throughout their relationship both before and after the introduction of the Hush-Law, a daily word limit that is enforced to all people throughout the region.
The play is not chronological and requires dynamic performances to bring this to life. Our set and props will be minimal allowing us to focus on performance and delivery.
The play jumps back and forward with lengthy scenes and short snippets of their life to show the audience their relationships at all angles.
We will be incorporating "chair duets" into our production, made famous by Frantic Assembly so be prepared for some unconventional (but very relaxed and fun) movement activities in the audition.
What to expect at the audition
We will kick off with the movement activities, these won’t be super high energy or require any form of special knowledge / understanding or clothing so please come as you are! We’ll guide you through the exercise and will take things at an easy pace!
If you have any questions about this part of the audition please reach out to Nicole Driver who can chat you through it.
Audition pieces can be found behind the box office at the theatre or you can request digital excerpts from Ali Lit. (allitvinovaa@gmail.com)
For those with a script the following excerpts will be explored during the audition:
"We need to stop meeting here" page 15 - "I was just checking" page 18
"Is it now?" page 96 - "thanks for telling me though" page 97
"Neville’s a prick" page 84 - "lemons lemons lemons lemons lemons done." Page 85
"I just wanted to say everything, okay" page 57 - "…YouTube videos about cats…" page 59
Rehearsals will commence on December 3rd and will generally be on Tuesday and Thursday evenings 7pm - 9:30pm, if you are unable to make standard Tuesdays/Thursdays rehearsals please make the audition panel aware at the audition so we can try to be as flexible as possible.
If you cannot make the in person audition please contact Nicole and Ali to arrange a video audition submission.
