FROM THEATRE TO FILM
Milly White was a member of the Lace Market Theatre and other Nottingham theatre groups for around a year when she moved to West Brigdford in 2017/2018. She both performed with these groups and designed and built the sets for some of the productions, including ‘She Stoops to Conquer’ here at the LMT and ‘Fiddler on the Roof’ with West Bridgford Operatic Society. Last summer Milly was one of eight people in the world to be accepted into the National Film and Television School (NFTS) to study a Masters Degree in Production Design. Production Designers are responsible for the visual concept of a film, television or theatre production; including designing the style for the sets, props, graphics, locations, costumes and more. They work closely with the Director and Cinematographer and are often one of the first people on a film.
At the NFTS Milly has been able to meet and learn from some of the industry’s leading practitioners in production design, directing, producing and more; including Louis Theroux (TV movie documentary Writer, Producer, Director - ‘Louis Theroux’s Weird Weekends’), Paul Greengrass (Director - ‘Bloody Sunday’, ‘Bourne Ultimatum’, ‘Captain Phillips’), Christina Moore (Supervising Art Director - ‘Game of Thrones’), David Yates (Director - ‘Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince’, ‘Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them’) and Dennis Gassner (Production Designer – ‘Barton Fink’, ‘Waterworld’, ‘Skyfall’ and ‘Blade Runner 2049’).
As part of the curriculum at the NFTS, Milly has taken part in numerous projects that are enabling her to develop her skills in; technical drawing (both by hand and digitally), concept art, 3D modelling (card scale models and digital models), set building techniques and develop her own style of design.
Milly is having a thrilling time at the school, taking up every opportunity that comes her way. She would like to say a big thank you to the LMT for their support in her studies and wishes everyone the very best. Though the NFTS is located in Beaconsfield, Milly is hoping to visit Nottingham and the LMT over the summer period.
